Hello parents,
In the next couple of weeks, your third grader will be learning how to sing using Solfège (think The Sound of Music...do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti) as well as reviewing how to read notes on a musical staff.
Third graders learn how to sing with the first three notes in a scale using do, re, and mi to help them hear the notes they are singing. This will come in handy when we are learning the first three notes on our recorders. We use these Solfège syllables to learn different musical patterns. These students also play 'Poison Pattern.' This game is fun and it helps the students identify musical patterns easier. Ask your child about this game, they love it! Along with Solfège, the students are learning a new song in the next couple of weeks called Shoheen Sho. It has the same notes and musical patterns as one of our recorder karate songs, but with different words.
The third graders are also learning how to read notes on a musical staff. They will first learn about the space notes (space spells FACE), and then the line notes (EGBDF or Elephants Go Bouncing Down Freeways).

Once they have learned both the space and line notes, they will learn how to tell the difference between the two and identify them on a worksheet. There are links in the side bar to the left for three different websites that have games for your child to practice reading notes.
