Hello parents,
The fourth graders will start learning about the history of the ukulele and the parts of the ukulele this week. Next week they will have their ukulele lesson! The history of the ukulele is fascinating, you should ask your child about it.
During the first day of ukulele, the students learn how to care for the instrument in class and how to hold it properly. They also learn technical aspects, such as the numbers of the strings (string 1 is closest to the floor, string 4 is at the 'top'), the numbers of their fingers (pointer finger is 1, middle finger is 2, ring finger is 3, and pinky finger is 4), and the numbers of the frets on the ukulele. This will help them in class and it will help them if they decide to continue learning how to play string instruments on their own. After we have reviewed all of that information, I teach them how to play their first chord. The first chord the students learn is the C chord.
Your children will start to learn about the Star Spangled Banner towards the end of next week.
