In the first two weeks of music, the first graders are learning about my expectations in music class. We talk about what a respectful listener looks like, and how being respectful and responsible in music class is different from their classroom.
I follow the Feierabend curriculum set out in "First Steps in Music for Preschoool and Beyond." This teaches the students to be musical in three different ways: tuneful (to be able to sing a tune from their head), beatful (to be able to keep a steady beat with a song), and artful (to be able to respond to music that makes them feel different emotions).
Music class follows a schedule for each class. The schedule is as follows:
1. Warm Up Our Voices
2. Fragment Songs
3. Simple Songs
4. Arioso (student created tunes in response to a simple question)
6. Beat Activities
7. Freeze Dance
I am excited to teach your children how to become tuneful, beatful, and artful, and I look forward to what this year will bring.
